Essex Firm Goes Extra Mile all Summer

Staff at one Essex company have ‘enjoyed’ an incredible summer of fundraising – pedalling and pounding the pavements – all to raise money for local charities.

Four members of Colchester’s CCD Global Events team set themselves some tough sporting challenges for the summer season, from marathons to cross-continent bike rides.

Head of Business Development Sharon Slade has just collected the last of her donations after completing the Brighton Marathon, John Aves, the company’s UK Account Executive, has finally recovered from cycling 160 miles in one day from Whitehaven to Whitby, and co-founder Liz Christey is in the final stages of preparation for a mass event London to Paris Charity Cycle Ride, together with colleague Nina Walker.

In all, the four will have raised thousands of pounds for the county’s charitable causes, including St Helena Hospice, Rett UK, and the Amy May Trust.

“We’re obviously a very active staff-force,” joked Liz Christey, managing director of the global event finding business.

“There are a number of us in the office who like to run or cycle at the weekends, and ahead of the summer we started talking more about how we could start putting some of our energy and enjoyment to use in the interests of good causes in our community.

“We all signed up for various events, and now we’re on course to have raised a huge sum of money which will go to some incredible organisations which make such a difference to the lives of others.”

Liz’s personal motivations were as a result of her husband losing two sisters to cancer. One had been nursed at Colchester’s St Helena hospice.

“I think it takes a personal experience to really be reminded of what an important feature the hospice is in our community,” she said.

“The very least I could do was start committing to some regular training and get fit enough to complete this challenge.”

CCD acts as a venue finder and event planning organisation for hundreds of worldwide companies every year. The management team now intend to implement a charitable initiative to encourage more of their clients to help them support causes in Essex.

Liz added: “Our customers range in size and scale, and some of them have been with us for many years, tasking us to find event locations for industry conferences or staff activities or bespoke Christmas parties.

“When many of them heard what we were up to, they wanted to offer to help, so we’re just developing our plans for a wider company initiative which will help boost our efforts every year, by involving our clients too.”
